Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has announced he will sign a new bill requiring all public and charter schools in the state to develop policies limiting cellphone use during the school day. Lawmakers passed the legislation amid growing concerns over classroom disruptions caused by screen time and social media.
Under the new law, schools must have wireless device policies in place by the 2027-28 school year. The policy allows exceptions for emergencies, medical reasons, individualized education plans, and certain classroom-related uses.
“Every parent and educator knows the damage that unchecked screen time and social media can do to our children and how disruptive they can be in school,” Governor Pritzker said, highlighting the widespread concern among families and teachers. He also noted the measure’s bipartisan support, saying it reflects “the urgency educators and families across Illinois feel.”
Supporters of the law argue that limiting cellphone use will help students stay focused in class and reduce distractions throughout the school day. The move is part of a broader effort to improve learning environments and address the mental health impacts of excessive screen time on students.
