TENNESSEE WESLEYAN CLAIMS NAIA WORLD SERIES TITLE, FORMER FAIRFIELD MULE PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN THE VICTORY
The Tennessee Wesleyan baseball team capped a dominant postseason run by defeating Taylor University 21-3 this past Saturday in Lewiston, Idaho, to win the NAIA World Series championship.
Pitching efforts also played a key role in the victory. Former Fairfield Mules standout, McGwire Taylor, who grew up in Wayne City and later moved to Fairfield, started on the mound and threw 4 2/3 innings, striking out six. Cameron Goffar (10-3) followed in relief, allowing just two hits over 3 1/3 scoreless innings to help secure the championship win.
The victory marks the third national title in program history for the Athens-based school, with previous championships coming in 2012 and 2019. It is also the third NAIA World Series title for head coach Billy Berry. The eighth-seeded Bulldogs (49-15) advanced to the championship game after surviving a high-scoring 16-14 win over William Carey the day before. Their opponent, top-seeded Taylor (56-7), entered the title game well-rested after having the previous day off.
