Authorities are investigating a tragic accident that claimed the life of an 18-month-old child Friday evening north of Opdyke.
According to Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse, the child was struck and killed in the driveway of a residence in the 1200 block of North Light House Lane at approximately 8 p.m. Friday. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The child’s name has not been released pending notification of family members.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation and requested assistance from an Illinois State Police Accident Reconstructionist to help determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
An autopsy is scheduled for this (Monday) morning as the investigation continues.
