The McLeansboro City Council met Tuesday night and received a $5,812.48 matching grant check for safety equipment from Snedeker Risk Management. Brent Williams presented the check and invited city officials to attend an upcoming trust conference.

During public comments, representatives of the Kiwanis Club reported progress on improvements at Kiwanis Park. Playground equipment has been installed, dirt work and landscaping fabric have been completed, and mulch is expected to be added soon. The organization also presented a grant request seeking city assistance with the project.

Janice Crow with Birth to Five Illinois outlined efforts to connect families with children under age 8 to regional resources and services, explaining the organization serves as a referral and information hub rather than a direct service provider.

Council members approved monthly financial reports, noting a decline in Water Tower Service funds due to maintenance expenses. They also approved a $2,500 TIF façade grant payment to Country Financial and adopted Fiscal Year 2027 Appropriations and Budget Amendment Number Two.

Department reports showed the fire department has responded to 49 calls so far this year. Public Works officials reported electrical work has been completed for a cooling tower project associated with Huck’s expansion, and seven zoning permits were issued during the past month.

The council approved the second reading of Ordinance 26-1148, updating the city code. Members also approved a change order related to the fire station addition, shifting the project three feet south despite discussion regarding costs and scope.

Council members also approved adding a second School Resource Officer for Hamilton County schools, contingent upon the school district covering all associated costs. The position will be part-time, with details regarding training and payroll expected to be finalized following discussions with school officials.

The council was also reminded that the City of McLeansboro’s annual fireworks display is scheduled for July 4th at Lake McLeansboro, with a rain date of July 5th. The city swimming pool will be closed on July 4th, and no pool parties will be scheduled on July 3rd.
