Edmison Acres near Johnsonville welcomed visitors June 22 as part of the Illinois Extension Summer Twilight Series, showcasing the family’s growing success in the specialty Highland cattle market.
Owned by Chad and Lindsey Edmison, the farm combines row crop production with a herd of approximately 25 Highland and Highland-cross cattle. Lindsey Edmison began raising the heritage breed in 2020 after growing up around traditional beef cattle.
During the tour, Edmison discussed the farm’s regenerative grazing practices, herd management during hot weather, and the unique characteristics of Highland cattle, including their docile temperament and overall health.
She said the farm’s primary focus has shifted to producing quality breeding stock with good dispositions, although the cattle are also occasionally sold for beef or as pets. Edmison noted that word-of-mouth recommendations have been just as effective as traditional livestock marketing methods.
The Summer Twilight Series is designed to give farmers and community members an opportunity to learn from local agricultural producers while exploring innovative farming practices and specialty markets.
Edmison encouraged those interested in niche agriculture to pursue their goals, saying resources are available and success is possible with dedication and planning.
The Summer Twilight Series continues in July with a tour of Pink Tiger Farm, featuring ginger, turmeric, and value-added products, followed by an August tour of Friendly Farms, a family-owned operation specializing in mums and pumpkins.
