EXTREME HEAT TO CONTINUE THROUGH FRIDAY ACROSS SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

By Mark Wells Jul 2, 2026 | 6:00 AM

The National Weather Service says dangerously hot and humid conditions will continue across Southern Illinois and the Ohio Valley through the end of the work week.

An Extreme Heat Advisory remains in effect through tomorrow, with afternoon heat index values expected to range from 105 to more than 110 degrees. Forecasters say the combination of high temperatures and humidity poses a significant health risk, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and check on elderly neighbors, young children, and pets.

There is some relief in sight. Low chances for showers and thunderstorms return today and tomorrow, with rain chances increasing over the Independence Day weekend. Additional cloud cover and scattered rainfall are expected to bring heat index values down slightly, although they could still reach around 105 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.

The National Weather Service urges everyone to continue practicing heat safety until temperatures moderate.
