Fairfield Memorial Hospital has earned the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Rural Gold Recognition Award, honoring the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based stroke care to patients in rural communities.
The award recognizes rural hospitals that consistently meet nationally recognized standards for stroke treatment, including rapid patient evaluation, brain imaging, emergency medical services coordination, swallowing assessments, appropriate use of clot-busting medications, stroke specialist consultation, and efficient transfer procedures when advanced care is needed.
Hospital CEO Andy Flemer credited the recognition to the teamwork of physicians, nurses, emergency department personnel, radiology staff, laboratory professionals, and support staff.
“As a rural hospital, we understand the unique challenges our community faces,” Flemer said. “We remain committed to providing the highest standard of stroke care so our patients have the best possible opportunity for recovery and improved outcomes.”
According to the American Heart Association, rural residents face higher rates of heart disease and stroke and often have less access to specialized medical care. Stroke remains the fourth-leading cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States, making rapid diagnosis and treatment critical.
The American Heart Association said Fairfield Memorial Hospital’s recognition reflects its dedication to improving stroke outcomes and ensuring patients throughout southeastern Illinois have access to lifesaving care close to home.
Hospital officials say they will continue investing in evidence-based practices, staff education, and quality improvement initiatives to strengthen emergency care for stroke patients and others experiencing life-threatening medical conditions.
