The first positive case of the West Nile Virus for the year has been confirmed in far-southern Illinois.

The Southern 7 Health Department has confirmed a positive test for the West Nile Virus in mosquitoes in Massac County.  The case was reported this past Wednesday, and was confirmed from a mosquito trap set in the county.  They also said traps were placed in each of their lower seven counties during May and will be tested weekly until mid-October.

So far, no human cases have been reported in the region.  Health officials continue to stress residents take precautions using the three “Rs”, which include reduce, repel and report.
