An 18-year-old Effingham woman is facing felony charges following an early morning shooting Friday that targeted a vehicle occupied by three people.
Effingham Police responded at approximately 1:50 a.m. to reports of shots fired in the 300 block of North 3rd Street. Officers learned the occupants of the targeted vehicle—one adult and two teenage juveniles—had already left the scene and gone to the Effingham Police Department.
Investigators determined a single round was fired from a handgun at the vehicle. No one was injured.
Police identified Jalen N. Herschberger, 18, of Effingham, as the suspect. She was arrested without incident and transported to the Effingham County Jail.
Herschberger is being held pending court proceedings on charges of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, a Class 1 felony, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, a Class A misdemeanor.
Judge Ericka Sanders found probable cause to detain Herschberger pending the filing of formal charges. A detention hearing is scheduled for Monday, July 27, to determine whether she will remain in custody under the Illinois Pretrial Fairness Act.
Effingham Police said the investigation indicates the shooting was targeted and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active, with assistance from the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police.
