The National Weather Service in Paducah has extended a Heat Advisory through 7 p.m. tonight for portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, and western Kentucky.
Forecasters say heat index values could reach 106 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended periods outdoors.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas.
Officials also remind residents to check on elderly neighbors, young children, and those without adequate cooling, and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should seek medical attention immediately. Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency and requires calling 911.
