Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse pronounced a 25 year old Odin, IL woman dead following an accident three miles south of Dix on I-57 late Thursday night.
Reports from Jefferson County said Madison Burton died from injuries after being taken to the emergency room of Good Samaritan Hospital. Coroner Hayse said Burton had been waiting along the shoulder of the interstate for help to arrive to assist her with changing a flat tire when the accident occurred. Reports said her car was apparently hit in the rear by a pickup truck that had left the roadway.
State police didn’t immediately release details on the accident, but did indicate that a semi was also involved. Officials said the impact of the crash caused Burton’s car to be pushed off the shoulder and overturn. Burton was later extricated by firemen.
The crash was reported just after 10 p.m. Thursday.
