Illinois State Police have released additional preliminary information about a three-vehicle crash that killed 25-year-old Madison Burton of Odin Thursday night on Interstate 57.

According to ISP, Burton’s vehicle was parked on the interstate shoulder with its emergency flashers activated because of a flat tire.

Investigators said an approaching semi activated its turn signal to move into the passing lane as required by state law. The semi driver then reportedly saw a pickup rapidly approaching and changing lanes and stopped the lane change to avoid a collision.

Police say the pickup then moved back into the driving lane before traveling onto the shoulder in an attempt to pass the semi. The pickup struck Burton’s disabled vehicle, causing it to overturn into a ditch.

The pickup then re-entered the roadway, struck the semi and also went into the ditch.

Burton was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead in the emergency room. The unidentified pickup driver was also hospitalized with injuries.

Illinois State Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
