The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is now accepting applications for its 2026 free upland game hunting permit lottery and controlled pheasant hunting program.
The free permit lottery provides opportunities to hunt wild bobwhite quail, ring-necked pheasants and cottontail rabbits at select state sites. Applications will be accepted through Aug. 31.
Hunters may select up to six hunting areas and four dates for each location when applying online.
IDNR is also accepting applications for its controlled pheasant hunting program, which features pen-raised pheasants released at 11 Illinois state parks. The program includes three lottery drawings followed by a first-come, first-served permit period.
Controlled pheasant hunting permits cost $35 for Illinois residents and $40 for nonresidents. Youth hunting opportunities and additional wingshooting clinics will also be offered this season.
Applications, participating locations and additional information are available through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources website.
