The Fairfield Swimming Pool has closed for the season with improved attendance, but the facility still operated at a loss, the Fairfield Park Board heard Thursday night.
Park Board President Jay Fyie reported the pool generated approximately $47,500 in revenue, compared with about $55,000 in expenses, resulting in a loss of roughly $7,500.
Officials attributed the increased expenses largely to utility costs that doubled along with higher labor costs.
Pool Manager Morgan Talbert reviewed the season and said free swimming events proved popular and helped generate revenue. Park Superintendent Chris Jenkins also reported the pool passed its end-of-season inspection, with inspectors noting the facility remains in good condition despite being 78 years old.
Talbert said one of the most frequent comments from swimmers involved the former baby pool, which is planned to be replaced by a splash pad. Fyie said the park district has $500,000 earmarked for the project, which is currently estimated to cost about $1 million.
The board also received an encouraging report on the Fairfield golf course. Fyie said play increased this year and the park district has received four payments from the golf course operation, compared with two last year.
