Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is encouraging residents to complete routine driver and vehicle transactions online instead of visiting a DMV.

The Secretary of State’s office says as many as 2,000 customers each day visit DMV facilities for services that could be completed online.

Use of those services continues to grow. During the first seven months of 2026, approximately 560,000 eligible driver’s license and state ID transactions were completed online, up 43% from the same period last year.

Online vehicle sticker renewals also increased, with more than 2.25 million completed during the first seven months of the year.

Over the past year, Illinois residents completed nearly 4.4 million online renewals involving eligible driver’s licenses, state IDs and vehicle stickers.

Giannoulias says residents should check the Secretary of State’s website before visiting a DMV to determine whether their transaction can be completed online.
