The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is making more than $766,000 available to help local governments improve energy efficiency in public buildings.
Illinois EPA Director James Jennings announced Tuesday that $766,600 is available through the Public Buildings Energy Efficiency Program. Funding can be used for projects identified through an energy efficiency assessment or audit conducted within the past five years.
The program provides financial assistance to municipalities, counties and other units of local government for improvements to publicly owned buildings.
Eligible projects can include building insulation, window replacements, lighting upgrades, programmable thermostats, occupancy sensors, heating and cooling system retrofits, high-efficiency appliances and transfer switches.
Jennings said the program will provide both financial resources and technical support while helping public buildings reduce energy use and operating costs.
Individual grants will be capped at $200,000. Funding for the program comes through the U.S. Department of Energy’s State Energy Program.
Applications for the Efficient and Resilient Public Building Grant will be accepted through September 30 and must be submitted through the state’s Grant Accountability and Transparency Act Grantee Portal.
