Hot and humid conditions are expected to continue across southern Illinois and surrounding areas, with daily heat index values reaching as high as 100 to 106 degrees.
The National Weather Service in Paducah says the combination of high temperatures and humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses. Heat index readings are expected to be closer to 100 today, while small chances for rain Friday could provide limited relief.
The heat is expected to persist into at least most of the week. High temperatures are forecast to reach the upper 90s beginning Monday, with mostly dry conditions expected. Only slight chances for showers and thunderstorms are forecast Thursday and Friday.
Extended forecasts through September 11 indicate above-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows no drought conditions in Illinois, although continued hot and dry weather could begin to affect conditions during the next week or two.
Area rivers remain below flood stage. The Little Wabash River was at 5.23 feet east of Fairfield and 4.7 feet at Clay City, while the river at Carmi stood at 4.68 feet. The Skillet Fork at Wayne City was at 5.06 feet.
The Wabash River at Mount Carmel was at 17.03 feet, below its 19-foot flood stage. Bonpas Creek at Browns was at 1.29 feet, while the Ohio River at Old Shawneetown was at 20.03 feet.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned areas when possible, limit time in the sun and check on relatives, neighbors and pets during the heat.
