A Fairfield man has been ordered held in custody after being charged in connection with the Sunday morning shooting of his girlfriend.

53-year-old Rawleigh L. Bailey of Fairfield made his first appearance Tuesday afternoon in Wayne County Circuit Court before Judge Denton Aud.

Wayne County State’s Attorney Kyle Ellis filed three charges against Bailey: attempted murder with intent to kill, a Class X felony; domestic battery causing bodily harm with four prior convictions, a Class 2 felony; and reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony.

The shooting occurred around 9 a.m. Sunday at Bailey’s Fairfield home. Family members say the victim, Becky Bennett, was shot in the face and chest. Doctors reportedly removed a bullet from her lung, while the head wound missed vital areas.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Judge Aud denied Bailey pretrial release and ordered him to remain in custody while the case is pending.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 24th at 1 p.m.
