By Mark Wells Sep 3, 2026 | 11:52 AM

Marching bands from across Southern Illinois are being invited to participate in the 2026 Mt. Vernon Fall Fest Marching Band Expo on Saturday, September 2th. The competition begins at 1 p.m. in downtown Mt. Vernon and will feature high school, junior high and middle school bands performing along the Fall Fest parade route. Bands will be judged on music performance, marching and maneuvering, general effect and overall presentation.

Competition will be divided into three classes: high schools with enrollment of 250 or more, high schools with 249 or fewer students, and an open junior high and middle school division.

Each division will offer $500 for first place, $250 for second and $100 for third, subject to participation requirements. An Overall Grand Champion will receive $1,000, although the award may be adjusted if fewer than eight bands participate. Following the parade, the second annual James Ware Memorial Drumline Showcase will be held at The Commons. Participating schools will receive a $200 stipend for taking part.

Schools may participate in the Marching Band Expo, the Drumline Showcase or both.

Mt. Vernon Tourism Director Angela Schrum said the events give student musicians an opportunity to showcase the work they have put into their programs before a large Fall Fest crowd.

Several schools have already registered, and organizers are encouraging additional bands from throughout Southern Illinois to participate. For more information visit: www.mtvfestivals.com or follow Mt. Vernon Festivals, Inc. on social media.
