Illinois transportation and law enforcement officials are urging motorists to drive sober and safely during the Labor Day holiday period as increased enforcement continues across the state.
The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies are participating in a Labor Day safety campaign through September 8th with an increased focus on removing impaired drivers from the road.
ISP troopers, local police and sheriff’s departments will be watching for motorists impaired by alcohol, cannabis or other drugs.
According to IDOT, nine people were killed on Illinois roads during last year’s Labor Day weekend. Three of the fatal crashes were alcohol-related and resulted in three deaths.
Officials are encouraging anyone planning to drink alcohol or use cannabis to designate a sober driver or use a taxi or rideshare service. Motorists who see a suspected impaired driver are encouraged to contact law enforcement.
The campaign also emphasizes seat belt use, obeying speed limits and following other traffic laws.
The enforcement effort is part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” programs and IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” traffic safety campaign.
