OLNEY LADY TIGERS VOLLEYBALL CLASSIC:
The Fairfield Lady Mules Varsity and JV Volleyball squads were both in action Saturday at the Olney Lady Tigers Volleyball Classic with the Varsity team finishing 4-1 on the day to win the Tournament Championship.
The Lady Mules Varsity squad picked up wins over Mt. Zion, Hutsonville/Palestine, ALAH,( Arthur, Lovington, Atwood and Hammond) and a victory over the Lady Mules JV squad. The Fairfield Varsity squad turned in an impressive performance with its lone loss coming to Effingham St. Anthony in 3 sets
The JV squad went 2-3 on the day playing very well against varsity competition. JV defeated Edwards County and Arcola in pool play to advance to the Gold bracket, where they finished fourth.
The tournament ended in a three-way tie for first place, with the Lady Mules Varsity taking the title on the tiebreaker with the least points allowed in gold bracket play. ALAH placed 2nd, Effingham St Anthony 3rd and the Lady Mules JV squad placed 4th.
Dalanie Ellis, Jensyn Robbins, Kiersten Vaughn and Taylann Kovacich were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY:
The Mules and Lady Mules Cross Country teams were in action Saturday at the Eastern Illinois University Panther Trail Meet against 25 other teams with 232 Boys runners and 149 Girls runners. The Mules Boys team finished 10th overall while the Lady Mules finished 6th. Notable performances for the Mules were: Ashton King-23rd, Treyton Lewis-73rd, Skylar Bladel-78th, Jarret Vaughan-81st, and Kendall Diesel-108th. Notable performances from the Lady Mules were: Emeri Sager-13th, Nela Segitova-49th, Gabby Zurliene-55th, Ellanie Vanway-71st, and Brianna Meeks-84th.

The White Sox beat the Twins 10-1 to claim their three-game series from Chicago. Randal Grichuk slugged a solo bomb and Kyle Teel launched a three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth. Hagen Smith was credited with the victory. The Sox have today off and will host the Pirates beginning tomorrow.

Nolan Gorman’s two-run homer capped a six-run fifth inning and the Cardinals held on to beat the Rockies 10-8 in Denver. Ivan Herrera had three hits, two RBIs and scored twice for St. Louis, which has won four of six. The Cards visit San Francisco starting tonight.

The Cubs were denied the sweep in Miami following a 10-3 loss to the Marlins. Pete Crow-Armstrong smacked his 40th home run for the Northsiders, who had won their previous three. Clay Holmes was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs on six hits and three walks. The Cubs visit Milwaukee starting today.

Former Bears Fullback Matt Suhey Dies At 68
(Chicago, IL) — The Bears are mourning the passing of former player Matt Suhey. The former fullback died yesterday at the age of 68. He played on the 1985 squad that went on to win the Super Bowl. Suhey served as the lead blocker for Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton for much of his ten years in Chicago.

New York opens the regular season on Sunday Night Football when it hosts the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.

Bell passed Kyle Larson with 18 laps remaining to take the lead. Ty Gibbs finished second and Tyler Reddick was third. Ryan Blaney and Larson rounded out the remainder of the top five. Denny Hamlin remains the top seed with the Chase heading to World Wide Technology Raceway for the Enjoy Illinois 300 on Sunday.
