The Illinois Supreme Court is accepting applications for the newly created position of Illinois State Public Defender, who will oversee a statewide public defense system within the Judicial Branch.
The State Public Defender will serve as Illinois’ leading advocate for public defenders and help establish policies and reforms aimed at ensuring effective legal representation for people unable to afford an attorney in criminal, juvenile delinquency and dependency cases.
The person selected will also be responsible for building the new office, including hiring key staff, establishing regional offices, implementing statewide guidelines and identifying funding sources.
Applicants must be licensed Illinois attorneys in good standing with at least five years of practice and have experience in administration, supervision and representing people accused of crimes.
The position carries an annual salary of $218,400 and prohibits the State Public Defender from engaging in private law practice.
Applications will be accepted through Friday, October 9th. The Illinois Supreme Court will select the initial State Public Defender for a two-year term beginning January 1st.
