The National Weather Service in Paducah has extended a Heat Advisory for all of southern Illinois through 7 p.m. Sunday as an extended stretch of late-season heat and humidity continues.
Forecasters say daily peak heat index values are expected to range from 100 to 106 degrees, with record or near-record temperatures possible in parts of the region.
Highs today are expected to reach the upper 90s after morning temperatures in the lower 70s. Temperatures could climb above 100 degrees in some locations Friday afternoon. Mainly dry conditions are forecast, although an isolated shower cannot be ruled out.
The National Weather Service says the prolonged period of hot temperatures and high humidity could increase the risk of heat-related illness. Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, limit strenuous outdoor activities to the morning or evening and check on relatives, neighbors and pets.
Relief from the heat is now expected to arrive early next week. Highs are forecast to fall into the lower 90s Monday, the middle 80s Tuesday and the lower 80s by Wednesday.
