Wabash Area Development, Inc. has announced that funding is available to help income-eligible households with natural gas, propane and electric bills, as well as furnace assistance for inoperable heating systems.
WADI administers the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, in Edwards, Gallatin, Hamilton, Saline, Wabash, Wayne and White counties.
Applications will open October 1st for adults age 60 and older, individuals with disabilities, families with children age five and younger, and households that have been disconnected, received a disconnection notice or have less than 25 percent remaining in their propane tank.
All other income-eligible households may begin applying November 1st.
Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through August 13, 2027, or until funding is exhausted. LIHEAP provides one-time assistance to eligible homeowners and renters with energy bills and reconnection of utility service. Additional reconnection or furnace assistance may be available later in the program year when needed.
Income eligibility varies depending on the household’s utility provider and number of household members. Applicants will need to provide documentation including proof of household income for the previous 30 days, current heating and electric bills and, for new applicants or household members, documentation involving Social Security numbers or other applicable identification. Additional documents may be required depending on the household.
WADI is encouraging eligible propane customers to apply early, noting that propane prices typically increase during the winter.
