The Illinois State Police is reminding teens and their families to celebrate homecoming season responsibly, with an emphasis on avoiding impaired and distracted driving, speeding and failing to wear seatbelts.
According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fact sheet cited by ISP, young people ages 15 to 20 accounted for 9% of all drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes. Among young drivers killed, 53% were not wearing a seatbelt and 29% had alcohol in their system.
ISP says impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and improper seatbelt use are commonly referred to as the “fatal four” contributing factors in major injury and fatal crashes in Illinois.
ISP Director Brendan Kelly says troopers will conduct increased traffic enforcement and patrols during homecoming season while also providing safety education. Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss the dangers of alcohol and drug use with teens and remind them never to ride with an impaired driver.
Illinois has a zero-tolerance policy for underage drinking, and it is illegal for anyone under 21 to possess or consume alcohol. Violations can result in citations, fines or arrests.
Young drivers are also reminded to obey speed limits, wear seatbelts regardless of where they are sitting in a vehicle and avoid distractions. Illinois law prohibits drivers under age 19 from using a cellphone while driving, including hands-free devices, except when contacting law enforcement or emergency services.
ISP says making responsible decisions before, during and after homecoming activities can help ensure students make it home safely.
