Bond has been set at a half million dollars, according to media reports out of Jefferson County, for a Mt. Vernon, IL man accused of sexually abusing a child and possessing child pornography.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 56-year-old Darren Meyer this past Wednesday after responding to a report of a disturbance at Meyer’s address and someone wielding a knife.
Detectives had already been investigating a report of a 14-year-old girl possibly being the victim of voyeurism. That investigaion led detectives to believe the girl was also the victim of sexual abuse.
Meyer was eventually arrested in the case and formally charged Friday with a Class 2 felony charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim under the age of 13. and 10 Class 2 felony counts of child pornography.
Bond was set at $500,000 by Judge Jo Beth Weber and advised Meyer of the charges against him and their possible penalties.
The case is set for a preliminary hearing September 21st, along with a first appearance with Meyer’s court-appointed attorney.
