One person was killed and two others seriously injured Tuesday morning in a multi-vehicle crash involving an Amish buggy in Wayne County.
The crash was reported at approximately 7:09 a.m. along County Highway 16, the extension of Illinois Route 161 west of Johnsonville, in the area of the 600 block of County Highway 16.
The Wayne County Coroner’s Office has identified the person killed as 29-year-old Rebecca Esh, an Amish school teacher.
Authorities say Esh was transporting two female students to school when the crash occurred. Both students suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to an Evansville hospital for treatment.
Authorities say the buggy and the other vehicle involved were both traveling eastbound on County Highway 16. Bright morning sunlight is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash.
The female driver of the other vehicle was not injured. Her name has not been released.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Wayne County Ambulance Service and Cisne Fire Department responded to the scene. An accident reconstructionist with the Illinois State Police was also called to assist with the investigation.
The crash remains under investigation.
