Betty Jane Doerner, 99, of Carmi

Betty Jane Doerner, 99, of Carmi, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Wabash Senior Living and Rehab. Born September 2, 1927, in Broughton, she was the daughter of Truman Wilson and Mary D. (Wilson) Gwaltney. Betty graduated from Norris City High School in 1946. On January 1, 1950, she married Roy Kenneth Doerner, and they shared more than 68 years of marriage before his death on April 14, 2018. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Carmi and worked as a secretary for the Rebstock family for 72 years, retiring at age 97. In her free time, Betty enjoyed sewing and shopping.

          Betty is survived by her children, Kathy (Jim) Taylor of Burnt Prairie and Terry Doerner of Carmi; grandchildren, Misty (Bucky) Gwaltney, Brandon (Jennifer) Barbre; step-grandchildren, Jimmy (Carol) Taylor and Tonya (Ryan) Hobbs; great-grandchildren, Olivia (Will) Ledford, Elizabeth (Kaden) Richards, Gracyn Barbre, Whitley Barbre, Violet Barbre, and Caleb Barbre; four step-great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren, Elliotte Hope Ledford and Eilee Jane Richards who is due this month; two step-great-great-grandchildren with one on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents, Truman and Mary Gwaltney; husband, Roy Kenneth Doerner; siblings, Ned Gwaltney, Thelma Reynolds, and Madeline Gaines.

          Funeral Services for Betty J Doerner, 99, of Carmi will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2026 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will follow in North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2026 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to the Ronald McDonald House in Evansville and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home, 609 W. Main St., Carmi, IL 62821.
