

Betty Akamani pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges stemming from the September shooting death of her husband, Southern Illinois University Carbondale professor Kofi Akamani.
According to an October 6th court entry, the 35-year-old Akamani appeared from the Jackson County Jail. A public defender was appointed to represent her, and the charges contained in the indictment were formally read before she entered her not guilty pleas.
Akamani faces two counts of first-degree murder and one count of child endangerment.
The charges stem from the September 19th shooting of 48-year-old Kofi Akamani near a residence off Lake Road between Murphysboro and Carbondale. He was transported to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead.
Betty Akamani remains in custody after previously being denied pretrial release.
A pretrial hearing is scheduled for October 27th at 8:30 a.m., followed by a status hearing November 9th at 1 p.m. A jury trial is currently scheduled for November 16th at 8:15 a.m.
