Illinois State Police are reminding motorists to slow down and move over after two ISP squad cars were struck in separate Scott’s Law-related crashes on Illinois interstates during a three-day period.

The first crash occurred Thursday at approximately 11:49 p.m. on Interstate 55 northbound near milepost 106.5. An ISP trooper was stationary in a construction zone with emergency lights activated when a northbound black Mazda struck the squad car. The trooper was inside the squad car at the time and was taken to a hospital by another trooper as a precaution. ISP says the driver of the Mazda, 43-year-old Tiffany Sipes of Williamsville, was cited for violating Scott’s Law and Driving Under the Influence.

A second crash occurred Friday at approximately 5:02 p.m. on Interstate 70 westbound near milepost 85.5. A trooper was stopped with emergency lights activated while working an active crash scene when a westbound black Land Rover sideswiped the squad car and struck another vehicle in backed-up traffic. The trooper was outside the squad car, and no injuries were reported. The driver, 45-year-old Amanda S. Thomas of Logan, was cited for Scott’s Law, improper lane usage, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, Driving Under the Influence and several other traffic offenses.

ISP says it has experienced 11 Move Over Law-related crashes so far in 2026, resulting in injuries to two troopers. In 2025, there were 15 such crashes with seven troopers injured. In 2024, ISP reported 27 Move Over Law-related crashes, resulting in 12 injuries and one death.

Illinois’ Move Over Law, commonly known as Scott’s Law, requires motorists to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles, emergency workers or other vehicles displaying emergency or hazard lights.

A first offense carries a fine ranging from $250 to $10,000. If a violation results in injury to another person, the driver’s license of the violator may be revoked.
