The City of Fairfield began what officials call a “free chlorine burn” of the city’s water system on Monday.
According to Fairfield Water Department Superintendent Cole Young, the city will temporarily switch from its normal use of chloramines — a combination of chlorine and ammonia — to chlorine alone. The process is designed to provide additional disinfection of the water system.
Residents may notice the water has a stronger chlorine smell or taste similar to swimming pool water during the process. City officials say the water will remain safe to drink, with chlorine levels monitored throughout the system.
The Water Department will also flush fire hydrants throughout Fairfield to remove chloramines and allow the free-chlorinated water to move through the system.
Residents may notice temporary water discoloration during the flushing process and are advised to check their water before doing laundry.
The process is expected to last approximately one month.
