Carmi has a new mayor following a specially called City Council meeting Tuesday morning.

Ward 2 Alderman Doug Hays was selected to serve as interim mayor, replacing Bill Stendeback, who abruptly resigned from office earlier this month.

Hays will serve as acting mayor until the April 2027 municipal election. He has already picked up petitions and announced his intention to run for mayor in the upcoming election.

Following his appointment, Hays emphasized his commitment to being accessible to Carmi residents and listening to their concerns. He said he is determined to meet with citizens and hear their suggestions and concerns as he transitions into his new role.

For now, Hays said the easiest and quickest way for residents to contact him is by email at mayor@cityofcarmi.com.
During Tuesday’s meeting, City Attorney Greg Stewart clarified that Hays may continue serving as Ward 2 Alderman while holding the position of interim mayor. Stewart said Hays can retain his aldermanic seat and continue voting on City Council matters during that time.

Hays confirmed that he has no plans to resign from his Ward 2 alderman position.

Stendeback, who was elected mayor in April 2025, submitted his resignation on October 5th. His departure created the vacancy filled by Tuesday’s appointment.

The winner of the April 2027 mayoral election is expected to serve the remaining two years of the current mayoral term.
