A Fairfield man was sentenced to 120 days in the Wayne County Jail Wednesday afternoon after being found in direct contempt of court during a hearing involving an order of protection. 49-year-old, Roy Finley of Fairfield appeared in Wayne County Circuit Court for a hearing concerning an order of protection filed by Carmi attorney Jonathan Turpin.
According to court records, Finley became disruptive during the proceedings and used profanity from the initials, “BS” while expressing his frustration with the case and was warned about his language and behavior. Despite receiving a second warning, Finley repeated the profanity. Circuit Judge Matt Vaughn found Finley in direct contempt of court and ordered him to serve 120 days in the Wayne County Jail without an additional hearing.
During the proceedings, Judge Vaughn also granted Turpin a two-year plenary order of protection against Finley. Under the order, Finley must remain at least 1,000 feet away from Turpin.
Finley is also facing a pending aggravated battery charge in White County stemming from a separate incident involving Turpin.
According to allegations in that case, Finley opened a vehicle door on Turpin after the attorney confronted him about allegedly recording video of Turpin’s residence and law office. Turpin reportedly sustained a hand injury during the encounter.
The aggravated battery case remains pending in White County Circuit Court. Finley has not been convicted of that charge.
