A 19-year-old Opdyke woman was killed Friday afternoon in a single-vehicle rollover crash on a rural gravel road in Jefferson County.
Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse identified the victim as Emily Wollite of Opdyke.
According to Hayse, Wollite was traveling on North Falcon Lane between Bluford and Belle Rive when she apparently lost control of her SUV on the gravel roadway.
The vehicle overturned onto its driver’s side, trapping Wollite’s neck between the vehicle and the ground.
Hayse says Wollite died from asphyxiation and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the only occupant of the vehicle.
Investigators believe the crash occurred at approximately 12:15 Friday afternoon after a nearby resident reported hearing a loud bang around that time.
The resident did not investigate the noise, and the overturned vehicle was not discovered until shortly after 1 p.m., when another motorist came upon the crash scene.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation into the crash.
The Jefferson Fire Department also responded to assist at the scene.
