SSM HEALTH GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITAL OFFERS HEART SCREENING TO DETECT CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE

SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon is encouraging area residents to take a proactive approach to their heart health through a quick, non-invasive screening designed to identify the risk of coronary artery disease.

The hospital offers cardiac calcium scoring, a specialized CT scan that detects and measures calcium buildup in the coronary arteries, which can indicate the presence of coronary artery disease.

Cardiovascular disease remains a leading health concern among adults and can often develop without noticeable symptoms. The screening can help identify individuals who may be at increased risk for future heart-related complications.

Tedgie Morgan, an outpatient radiology nurse at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital, says early detection can play an important role in preventing serious cardiac problems.

“Early detection of coronary artery disease can help identify patients who may be at increased risk for cardiac events and allows providers to implement interventions that may slow disease progression,” Morgan said.

The screening itself takes only a few minutes. Patients lie on their backs with cardiac monitoring leads attached to their chests while a CT scanner captures images of the heart. The scan lasts approximately two to three minutes and requires patients to briefly hold their breath.

Preparation is minimal. Patients are asked to avoid caffeine and other stimulants for six hours before their appointment but may otherwise eat, drink and take their medications as prescribed.

The hospital has offered cardiac calcium scoring since April 2024.

To make the screening more accessible, SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital offers the procedure for a cash price of $100 when insurance is not billed.

Patients interested in the screening should speak with their primary care provider, who can order the scan. Once the hospital receives the order, staff will contact the patient to schedule an appointment.

Hospital officials say the results can help patients and their healthcare providers make informed decisions about lifestyle changes, preventive care and potential treatment options.
