The Albion City Council met in a regular session Monday night.
The council under visitors on business heard from Nick to Patel from Carmi. Patel owns a packaged liquor store in Carmi and would like to establish a store in Albion. The council agreed to a liquor store commission meeting next Monday at 7 p.m. to discuss a license category for the packaged liquor store.
Burl Pettigrew told the council that he and his wife have volunteered several hours cleaning up the Albion cemetery and wanted to bring to the council’s attention that a considerable amount of pruning of limbs and vines still needs to be done in the cemetery.
Pam Barbre with the IECC and Southern 14 training board offered a worker at no charge to the city to help with projects around town. The council agreed to the proposal and also OSHA training through IECC.
Mike Speir told the council that the repairs to the roof over the city hall and ambulance station would be around $5000.
The council decided to not purchase a banner for the stage area for the eclipse on the bricks. The council thought that they were supporting the chamber through other avenues including port-a-potties, extra city workers, and extra police hours. West Salem. Mayor Jeff Braham plus another member of the West Salem Village Board requested that the city of Albion contract animal control duties with West Salem. This would be for emergencies only. However, the council voted against the proposal from the group.
The council did approve the cost of between 37 and $38,000 for curb and gutter work and some new sidewalks in the resurfacing project discussed last month through Albion from the deep cut bridge north to Pine Street. This is at a considerable savings since some of the government money is involved in this funding project.
The council agreed to pay $3,978 for some fire hose replacement and replacement of some fire pagers. Albion fire chief, Danny Iverson made that request. The cost is being split between the rural fire department and the city of Albion Fire Department.
The sale of 80 acres of land that the city owns is closer. The council agreed to have the land appraised.
The council agreed to let out for bids the mowing of the Albion Cemetery including debris removal and agreed to donate the city sound system to the Albion Chamber of Commerce.
