On Tuesday morning, Travis Chapman took the oath of office as the new Assistant Police Chief of Mt. Vernon. A Facebook post by the Mt. Vernon Police Department highlighted Chapman’s background, noting that he brings 17 years of experience with the department to his new role.
Prior to his appointment as Assistant Police Chief, Chapman served as a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer veteran and spent two years as a police officer in Las Vegas. Within the Mt. Vernon Police Department, he has held various roles including patrolman, field training officer, corporal, sergeant, and captain in the patrol division. Chapman has also served as an internal affairs officer, firearms instructor, and has been recognized as Officer of the Year.
Chapman previously led the ILEAS WMD Special Response Team and currently holds the position of Team Commander for the High Risk Team, which is a joint effort between the Mt. Vernon Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
