MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

The Cardinals have won back to back games after holding off the Pirates 7-4 in their series opener at PNC Park. Kyle Gibson earned the victory after striking out eight and allowing four runs over five innings. Ryan Helsley secured his 31st save of the season after striking out one batter in a scoreless bottom of the ninth. Alec Burleson hit a two-run homer and Nolan Gorman slugged a grand slam. St. Louis is now in second place in the NL Central at 44-and-40. Miles Mikolas starts for St. Louis against Pittsburgh tonight at 5:40.

The Chicago Cubs weren’t able to complete a ninth-inning comeback bid during a 6-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field. The Cubs trailed by five entering the bottom of the ninth before getting within two thanks to a three-run home run from Seiya Suzuki. However, the next three Chicago batters were retired to end the game. The Northsiders are in last place in the NL Central at 39-and-47. Chicago at Philadelphia tonight at 7:05.

The Chicago White Sox lost to the Cleveland Guardians 7-6 in Cleveland. Both teams plays again tonight with first pitch at 5:40.

ILLINOIS BASKETBALL NEWS:

The four-star 6’3” guard that Illini fans thought was coming to play at Champaign-Urbana has suddenly changed his mind. Jeremiah Fears has announced he has decommitted from Illinois and is making himself available to other suitors. Fears is the younger brother of Michigan State point guard, Jeremy Fears. He was playing high school ball in Joliet, but more recently has been playing for a prep school in Arizona. He had originally committed to Coach Brad Underwood and Illinois back in January.

 

NHL NEWS:

The St. Louis Blues are keeping one of their best players around. The team signed forward Pavel Buchnevich to a six-year extension worth 48-million dollars yesterday. Buchnevich has been with St. Louis for the last three seasons. He had 27 goals and 36 assists in 80 games last season. In other team news, the Blues traded for Stars forward Radek Faksa and Senators forward Mathieu Joseph yesterday.

The 2024-25 Chicago Blackhawks hockey season is right around the corner. The team revealed the regular season schedule for next season yesterday. The Hawks begin the year at Utah on October 8th, and they have a four-game road trip to start the season. Chicago’s home opener is on October 17th against San Jose. The team wraps up the year against Ottawa on the road on April 15th.
