MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals got a strong start from Erick Fedde during a 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Busch Stadium. Fedde picked up his first win as a Cardinal after striking out six and allowing just one run on four hits in five innings. Alec Burleson and Nolan Arenado both drove in a pair during the victory, and Ryan Helsley picked up his 36th save. St. Louis has won three of five and remains in second place in the NL Central at 59-and-56. The Cardinals send Kyle Gibson to the mound against Tampa Bay tonight at 6:15.
The Chicago Cubs secured a series win with an 8-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins at Wrigley Field. The Cubs scored three runs in the third and added two more in the fourth to take early control of the contest. Michael Busch and Ian Happ both went deep in the victory. The Northsiders have won three of four and are now in fourth place in the NL Central at 57-and-60. The Cubs visit the White Sox tomorrow night.
It didn’t take long for the Chicago White Sox to find their way back to the loss column. The Southsiders gave up three seventh-inning runs during a 3-2 loss to the Oakland A’s at Oakland Coliseum yesterday. The Sox remain in last place in the AL Central at 28-and-89. They begin a series with the Cubs tomorrow night.

OLYMPIC NEWS:
The United States continued to collect hardware at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Quincy Hall won his first career Olympic medal after taking gold in the men’s 400 meter final. Kenneth Rooks won silver in the men’s 3000 meter steeplechase, and Katie Moon captured silver in the women’s pole vault final.
The U.S. women’s basketball team blew out Nigeria 88-74 to advance to the semifinals at the Paris Olympics. A’Ja Wilson led all scorers with 20 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Jackie Young added 15 points and Breanna Stewart sunk 13 on five-of-seven shooting. The ladies won their 59th straight Olympic game and will square off against Australia in the semifinals tomorrow. The men’s team plays Serbia in the semifinals today.
The U.S. added eight more medals on Wednesday at the Paris Olympics and is now closing in on the century mark. Team USA has claimed 94 total medals which includes a games-best 27 gold medals with just four days remaining. China remains second in the standings with 65 total medals and 25 gold. France sits third with 51 total medals.
NFL Preseason Week 1 Begins Tonight:
NFL football is back. Preseason Week One begins Thursday with the Patriots hosting the Panthers and Giants hosting the Lions. New England rookie quarterback and third-overall pick Drake May will play against Carolina. New York and Detroit will square off after both teams were fined by the NFL for fighting during joint practices this week. Both games start at 7 p.m. Eastern. Preseason Week One continues with three games on Friday, nine games on Saturday and two on Sunday.
