70 years ago today, WFIW signed on in Wayne County. Wayne County Broadcasting started WFIW-AM at 1 PM on August 20, 1953. For 70 years, WFIW has been Wayne County’s source for local news, weather information, and Fairfield Mules Sports.

WFIW stands for Fairfield, Illinois, Wayne. The station was started by Tom Land and Bryan Davidson. The station at launch was licensed to operate at 500 watts and in 1961, was approved to increase power to 1000 watts. The stations, under the direction of Dave Land sold the operation to The Original Company.

Prior to 1932, the call sign WFIW belonged to a station in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. That station was moved to Louisville and was soon changed to WAVE.
