At last Thursday’s Wayne City Village Board meeting, discussions regarding Police Chief Anson Fenton were sidelined due to his and Mayor Rocky Hedden’s absence. Chief Fenton previously stated he had severed ties with a Dodge Dakota truck, and a second attempt to transfer the vehicle to him was unanimously rejected after Trustee Steve Buxton labeled it “tantamount to corruption.” The board decided to sell the truck via sealed bids, expecting the sale to conclude by November.
Concerns were raised by residents regarding the absence of both the mayor and the chief. Trustee Roger Noe explained the mayor was on vacation and the chief was potentially quarantining due to COVID-19 exposure.
Trustee Tim Piper presented a cash envelope to the board, paying for playground equipment he had scrapped, which Police Chief Fenton had questioned as being improperly taken. Piper claimed he had permission from Mayor Hedden to take the equipment but did not receive confirmation from the mayor.
Paul Grimmer, owner of Grimmer Estates, attended the meeting amid complaints about property management issues, including disrepair and pest problems. Trustee Roger Noe stated the board would investigate these allegations.
The board rejected a request for a mini-excavator due to budget constraints, despite arguments for its cost-effectiveness compared to using a backhoe.
In old business, the board approved $26,900 for minor repairs to the village hall, significantly lower than earlier repair estimates. A proposal for parental leave for city workers was tabled for further discussion.
