The Fairfield City Council met on Tuesday evening at City Hall, addressing issues related to neglected properties. They awarded a contract worth $17,165 to Ray’s Mowing to demolish two homes located at 807 Walker and 407 N.W. Fifth St. The structures will be dismantled and removed. Fry’s Excavating submitted a competing bid of $17,500 for the same project. The council approved an ordinance adding terms for TIF and business district agreements on the hiring of plumbers and roofers. The council also approved implementing a municipal grocery retailers occupation & grocery service occupation tax of one percent to begin January of 2026 replacing the current one percent tax being eliminated by the State of Illinois and approval to increase fees for Zoning & Annexations to $200.
In other business, Steve McCormick was appointed as the newest member of the Fairfield Library Board, filling the vacancy left by Bill Arthur, who resigned due to health reasons.
The council also set October 30th and 31st for Halloween trick-or-treating from 5pm to 8pm both days and approved November 9th and December 7th for street closures during the Veterans Parade and the Christmas Parade. Wayne-White Electric Cooperative and Hoosier Energy will be doing work moving the city’s metering point from Albion to the Fairfield substation and making some switching changes and have given a 30 day time frame for completion. On September 18th from 4am to 4:05am, residents will experience a brief power outage to energize the switching gear.
Russell Blackford, representing the Victory Outreach Christian Center addressed the Mayor and council asking that the City of Fairfield proclaim the evening of October 12th to the evening of October 13th as a day of prayer and fasting for our country and the upcoming election. All churches in Fairfield and Wayne County have been asked to participate if possible. An informational meeting will be held at the Victory Outreach Christian Center on Monday, September 16th at 6:30pm.
