Larry Smysor – Fairfield

Larry Smysor, 76, of Fairfield passed away at 3:50PM on Thursday, September 12, 2019. He taught at Jasper Grade School for 50 years. While at Jasper he was also the Vice Principal and coach.
Larry was born on August 8, 1943 in Fairfield, the son of Lawrence and Bernice (Moore) Smysor. Larry attended college at California State University and received his teaching degree, and a master’s degree in Architectural Design. He later received a master’s degree in Educational Administration at Southern Illinois University. While attending college in California, Larry studied the art of Kung Fu San Soo and earned a black belt. He taught the art in Fairfield with his brother Frosty and sister Janie. Larry went on to teach the art through Frontier Junior College for many years. He received his 10th Degree Black Belt in Kung Fu San Soo.

Larry received the Lion’s Club Star Teacher Award for the years 2004, and 2006-2007.
Survivors include five siblings: Sally McMillan of Ft Collins CO, Sue Bryant of Carbondale, Bernice Chin Woo of Loveland CO, Ruby Simpson of Loveland CO, and Janie Sullivan of Fairfield.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Corabelle, Martha, Jacob, and Frosty (who taught at Center Street Grade School for 35 years)

Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday September 18th at 10:00AM at Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield with internment at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City immediately following the service. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5-7PM at the funeral home.

In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Jasper Athletic Program in memory of Larry Smysor and will be accepted at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home which is in charge of all the arrangements.
