Mary Helen (Taylor) Hubble – Enterprise

96-year-old Mary Helen (Taylor) Hubble, died peacefully April 3 at her home near Enterprise, Illinois, surrounded by family members and close friends. She was the widow of the late R. Leroy Hubble.

Born on July 18, 1924 in Hinton, West Virginia, to Charles A. and Gladys (Foster) Taylor, Mary was the eldest of four daughters. Growing up, she was educated at a one-room schoolhouse as well as the Hinton schools. After graduation, she worked as a telephone/switchboard operator for The Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. before meeting and marrying Leroy Hubble, a young civil engineer from Wayne County, Illinois.

They married on December 1, 1943 and shortly afterwards Leroy was commissioned into the Navy’s Seabee division, serving in Occupied Japan. They returned to West Virginia after the war, then moved as his work required to Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Maryland, and Illinois. Mary was active in church, women’s clubs, and as a school volunteer in each place.

Mary and Leroy built a retirement home in Wayne County in 1975 and moved there in 1982. The home was on land homesteaded and farmed by the family’s previous three generations.
