Headlines for Tuesday, July 26th

Fairfield Community High School is holding in-person registration today from 1-6pm and tomorrow from 10am until 2pm in the school study hall/library. The fees for this year are as follows: Textbook rental and computer disk fee – $50 per student; Drivers Education Fee (if enrolled) – $50; Student Parking Paved Lot – $25; Student Parking Gravel Lot – $15; The Technology Fee of $55 has been waived for the 2022-2023 school year. Financial aid forms will be available at registration for fee waivers. Students should make arrangements to have their picture taken during registration, regardless of if a student does in-person or on-line registration. Pictures taken during this time will be used for the yearbook and their student ID cards. The ID cards can be used at all FCHS home athletic events to allow a student to get in free of charge. There is no fee for having the pictures taken and a make-up date will be scheduled sometime during the school year. All incoming freshmen or out of state transfer students are required by Illinois law to have a physical prior to registering for school. You must bring the completed physical form to registration. Incoming freshmen must also have proof of a 2nd varivax immunization and seniors must have proof of meningococcal vaccine. Horizon Healthcare will be present on both dates to administer physicals to those students who need them for school or sports purposes. Any student who is a transfer to the district may pre-register in the guidance office by telephoning and scheduling an appointment at 847-9405 or 847-9406. Records from the previous school for transfer student should be sent to the FCHS guidance office. Transfer students should plan to register after regular registration. The first day of classes for the 2022-2023 school year will be Monday, August 15 with buses running a normal schedule. Classes will be in session from 8:10 to 3pm. Every Tuesday will be a 9am late start for the purpose of curriculum development and teacher training. Classes will begin at 9 and dismiss at 3pm. Buses will run at their normal time and student who arrive early will report to study hall until the first period begins. There will be no half day or early dismissals. On 7/22 at approximately 5 p.m. Wayne Co. Sherrif’s Dept responded to a single vehicle accident near CR2250. 34-year-old Randle M. Sette of Champaign, IL was travelling westbound on CR2250N in a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia near Keith, when he attempted to turn left onto left on CR1300E. Due to the size of the vehicle and the roadway being narrow, Sett was unable to navigate the turn and went into the small ditch on the left side of the roadway. The trailer dug into the roadway and stopped the vehicle.

 

on 7/23 at approximately 12:01 a.m., Wayne County Sherrif’s Dept. responded an accident on CR1145 N in Jasper. 21-year-old Alex G. Neikirk was traveling westbound on CoR 1145 N in a 2006 GMC Sierra, when another vehicle came around the corner on the wrong side of the roadway, causing Neikird to swerve around the vehicle, leaving the roadway and striking a tree. The other vehicle continued traveling and was not identified. There were no injuries reported.

 

On 7/24 at approximately 1:32 a.m. Wayne Co Sherrif’s Dept responded to a single vehicle accident on IL Hwy 15 near Jasper. 32-year-old Tina M. Chrtt was traveling eastbound on Hwy 15 in a 2013 Dodge Avenger. She advised Deputies that she attempted to turn onto CR2300E but turned too soon causing her to strike the ditch. She was arrested and charged with Aggravated DUI, and Permitting an Unauthorized Person to Drive. She was transported to the Wayne Co. Jail.

 

The Board of Commissioners of the Fairfield Park District have announced they will be holding a special meeting on Thursday, July 28, at 1pm. The purpose of the meeting will be to meet and discuss the potential splash pad. The meeting will be held at the swimming pool at Leo French Park.

 

The Wayne County Retired Teachers Association will meet on Tuesday, August 2, at Bob Boyles Hall on the campus of Frontier Community College in Fairfield. Lunch will be served at 11:30, followed by the program and business meeting. Cost of the meal is $12.00. Sara McGehee will present a program about her alpacas, Apollo, Winston, and Simon.

 

The North Wayne School District will have registration on Thursday August 4th from 2-6 pm at each of their four schools.  If you have questions about registration, you can call your school office or the district office.  The numbers are Mt. The Edwards County 4-H Sheep Show was held Monday, July 25. In the Hampshire Division Gabe Wyatt showed the Champion and the Reserve Champion Ewe. In the Corriedale Division the Champion Ewe was shown by JJ Spray. In the Cheviot Division JW Simms-Reisner showed the Champion and Reserve Grand Champion in the Ewe classes. Davina Witte had the Champion Ram in the Polled Dorset class.  Davina Witte, also, had the Champion and Reserve Champion in the Polled Dorset Ewe class.  JW Simms-Reisner showed the Champion Montadale Ram and the Champion and Reserve Champion Montadale Ewes. Davina Witte had the Champion Suffolk Ram and in the Suffolk Ewe class Davina Witte showed the Champion and Reserve Champion Ewes. Kenleigh Garrett had the Champion Ram and Champion and Reserve Ewes in the Other Breeds class.  The Champion Crossbred Ewe was shown by Alyson Williams and the Reserve Champion Ewe was shown by Sydney Williams. Gabe Wyatt had the Champion Non-Registered Ewe.  JJ Spray had the Reserve Champion Non-Registered Ewe.        The Grand Champion Ram was awarded to JW Simms-Reisner and he received a banner donated by Edwards County Farm Bureau Young Leaders.  The Reserve Grand Champion Ram was shown by Davina Witte. The Grand Champion Ewe was shown by Gabe Wyatt.  Kenleigh Garrett showed the Reserve Grand Champion Ewe.  Gabe Wyatt received the banner donated by Three Rivers Veterinary Clinic. In the Market Class, Gabe Wyatt showed the Grand Champion Market Lamb.  The banner was donated by Farm Credit Services of Illinois.  The Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb was shown by Alyson Williams. In the Showmanship Classes, the Senior division winner was Alyson Williams who received a trophy donated by Edwards County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee.  Sydney Williams won the Novice belt buckle donated by Wesley and Kelly Fryman.

 

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Friday reported 32,268 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Illinois, including 52 deaths since the Friday before, July 15th. The CDC says 58 counties are at the High Community Level, up from 50 counties a week ago. An additional 36 counties are at the Medium Community Level, which is down from 44 a week ago. The remaining 8 counties are in the Low Community Level. The IDPH says that while the new COVID-19 variant is continuing to spread at a high rate, people are encouraged to take the needed precautions. The downstate area counties on the High Level list are Wabash, Lawrence, Crawford, Clark, Cumberland, and Coles. Those now in the list of Medium counties are Richland, Jasper, Edwards, Wayne, White, Clay, Marion, Effingham, and Fayette. The Richland County Coroner’s Office continues to investigate the death of a Clay City man, formerly of Noble, after his body was discovered early Wednesday morning along Old Route 250, just east of the Richland County/Clay County line.  Authorities were called to the scene shortly after 6:00 Wednesday morning, and found 43-year-old Nathan Haase unresponsive.  He was pronounced deceased a short time later at 6:35.  Haase was apparently riding a motorbike west of the North Clay Road and Old Route 250 intersection, near the Little Muddy Creek bridge, when he apparently collapsed.  There was no trauma, and no foul play is suspected.  Results of an autopsy and toxicology report are pending.  The Richland County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Coroner’s Office at the scene.

 

Roughly 2,500 Boeing workers are expected to go on strike next month at three plants in the St. Louis area after they voted Sunday to reject a contract offer from the plane maker. The strike is planned to begin on August 1st at Boeing manufacturing facilities in St. Charles County, St. Louis County, and Mascoutah, Illinois. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 837 said workers want a “fair and equitable” contract. The company said it is disappointed workers rejected the deal that featured what it called competitive raises and a generous retirement package. Boeing will release its next quarterly earnings report on Wednesday.

 

Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices are now accepting nominations for county committee members. All nomination forms for the 2022 election must be received or postmarked in the local FSA offices by August 1st, a week from today. Farmers should contact their local FSA office to register and learn how to be involved in their county’s election. Election ballots will then be mailed to eligible voters in early November.

 

The Illinois Department of Revenue announced a State Sales Tax Holiday for certain school clothing and school-related items for back-to-school expenses. The state sales tax holiday is a ten-day period during which consumers can purchase certain clothing and school-related items and pay sales tax at a reduced rate.  The state’s portion of sales tax due throughout the holiday is reduced by 5% from 6.25% to 1.25%.  Items include qualifying clothing and footwear with a retail selling price of less than $125 per item and certain school supplies used by students in the course of study.  School supplies are not subject to the $125 threshold. The sales tax holiday starts on August 5th and ends on August 14th.

 

River stages as of this morning:  the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 24.38 feet, above the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 5.16 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 7.02 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 2.06 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 16.10 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 10.71 feet.
