Headlines for Thursday, July 28th

Fairfield Park District will hold a special meeting today at 1:00 p.m. at the Swimming Pool at Leo French Park, Fairfield, Illinois 62837. The purpose of the meeting will be to meet and discuss the potential splash pad.

 

The Wayne County Retired Teachers Association will meet on Tuesday, August 2, at Bob Boyles Hall on the campus of Frontier Community College in Fairfield. Lunch will be served at 11:30, followed by the program and business meeting. Cost of the meal is $12.00. Sara McGehee will present a program about her alpacas, Apollo, Winston, and Simon. Come see the boys of West Edge Alpacas.

 

The North Wayne Community Unit School District 200 will have registration next Thursday, August 4th from 2-6 pm at each of their four schools.  If you have questions about registration, you can call your school office or the district office.  The numbers are Mt. Erie 854-2611, Johnsonville 673-3044, Cisne Middle School 673-2156, Cisne High School 673-2154, or the District office at 673-2151.

 

High School registration for NCOE’s school year is scheduled as follows: Seniors – Aug. 9th 9am to Noon; Juniors – Aug. 10th 9am to 11am; Sophomores – Aug. 10th Noon to 2 pm; Freshmen – will need to email Mrs. Braden abraden@ncoeschools.org to set up an appointment for orientation on Aug. 8th. Registration documents will be online to print, complete, and return to the school.

 

The Bucket Calf and Beef Shows were held Wednesday, July 27 at the 4-H arena on the Edwards County Fairgrounds.  The Champion Beef Bucket Calf was shown by Conner Perkins who received a trophy donated by First Bank-Grayville.  Kayleigh Sanford showed the Reserve Champion Calf. Conner Perkins received the Showmanship Belt Buckle, donated by Citizens National Bank of Albion. In the Beef Show, Davina Witte showed the Champion Hereford Female and received a trophy donated by Speir Chiropractic, Inc.  Davina Witte, also, showed the Reserve Champion Hereford Female. In the Angus Breed Laney Stephens showed the Champion and Reserve Champion Angus Female, receiving a trophy donated by Ray Livesay-Windy Hill Farm. Laney Stephens received the Doug Raber, Agent – State Farm Insurance trophy for her Champion Simmental Female. Hallie Shelton showed the Champion Shorthorn and received the trophy from Citizens National Bank.  The Reserve Champion ribbon went to Chase Shelton. In the All Other Registered Breeds Female, Laney Stephens won the Champion trophy donated by 5B Simmental. The Champion Crossbred Female was shown by Alyssa Smith, the trophy was donated by Les Smith, Attorney at Law. The Grand Champion Beef Female banner, donated by Ray Livesay – Windy Hill Farm, was awarded to Laney Stephens.  The Reserve Grand Champion Beef Female was, also, shown by Laney Stephens. The Grand Champion Market Steer was shown by Laney Stephens.  She received a banner donated by the Edwards County Farm Bureau, Board of Directors.  Lidia Kelsey showed the Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer. In the Showmanship Division, Laney Stephens was awarded the Senior Showmanship trophy donated by Donald St. Ledger, DVM.  The Junior Showman was Chase Shelton, who won a trophy donated by the Bone Gap Cardinals 4-H Club, In Memory of LuLu Kelsey.  The Novice Showmanship belt buckle, donated by COUNTRY Financial – Doug Hortin, Agent was awarded to Hallie Shelton.

 

The Edwards Co. Master Showmanship Contest was held on Wednesday, July 27th at the 4-H barn.  2022 Winner is Laney Stephens.  The reserve is Tori Thompson.  Trophy presented by Neil and Debbie Fearn.

 

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says they are happy to report that 26-year-old Shadie Thomas of Clay City has been located safe.   The mentally challenged woman had been missing since leaving her home on May 5th. Sheriff Andy Myers says during the last 48 hours the sheriff’s office was able to develop a new lead on the whereabouts of Shadie. Members of the sheriff’s office responded to the location and met with individuals at the residence. Those individuals were more than cooperative with the members of the sheriff’s office and assisted them in making contact with Shadie. Myers says Shadie seemed happy and content to be at the location where contact was made. She was provided with contacts for additional resources to ensure her well-being moving forward. The sheriff’s office will continue to investigate the events surrounding this ongoing incident. Myers says the sheriff’s department is extremely happy that Shadie has been located safe and sound.  He notes the focus of the investigation has always been doing what is in Shadie’s best interest.  Myers’ is commending Deputy Luke Durre for taking the lead on the investigation as well as his staff for staying focused on the facts and the evidence throughout the investigation.

 

The sales of adult-use cannabis in Illinois jumped significantly in the last fiscal year. Illinois Department of Revenue officials say recreational marijuana sales climbed to $1.5 billion, generating major sales tax revenue. In fact, a record breaking $445 million was collected from adult use cannabis, a 50% increase over the previous year. 25% of that is earmarked for disadvantaged communities, with $113 million in grants awarded so far. The sales tax revenue, worth over $146 million, has gone to local governments.

 

Another rollover in the Mega Millions jackpot has raised the prize to a single winner on Friday night to at least one billion, 25-million dollars. While no one matched all the numbers correctly, an Illinois player who matched five numbers won $ 1 million.   That ticket was sold at a food shop in Huntley in suburban Chicago. Only three jackpots over $1 billion have ever been won in the U.S. A $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot was won by three tickets bought in California, Florida, and Tennessee in 2016, A $1.537 billion Mega Millions jackpot was won by a ticket bought in South Carolina in 2018, A $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot was won by a ticket in Michigan in 2021. The next Mega Millions drawing is this Friday night at 10 p.m.

 

River stages as of this morning:  the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 25.02 feet, above the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 9.10 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 20.39 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 14.26 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 23.37 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 14.80 feet.
