EDWARDS CO. REAL ESTATE TAX BILLS DUE

Edwards County Treasurer Debbie Smith is reminding Edwards County taxpayers that the first installment of the 2021 payable 2022 Real Estate Taxes are due today. This year’s Tax extension amounts to $6,490,579.88.

Payments may be made in person, by mail, or in the outside drop box. The box is located in front of the Cell Tower on the northeast side of the Courthouse (Sheriff’s side). Anyone who uses the drop box should include a daytime phone number on their information.

Those who wish to pay online using a credit or debit card may go to www.govtechtaxpro.com which will add a 2.5% fee that goes to the credit card company. The instructions are listed on the back of the tax bills on how to pay online.

The second installment will be due Monday, November 28, 2022.

Parking Lot Closing 

The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Fairfield would like to inform the public the city parking lot east of the post office will be closed at 4:00 PM on Monday, October 31.The Chamber and City of Fairfield will host a trunk or treat event from 5-8. We have several business and individuals who will set up to pass out candy and treats to trunk or treaters. Also, hot dogs will be available. Please have all vehicles moved by 4:00 PM.

Local Halloween Events

 

Today

One Strong Mission Group’s Haunted Attic & Chili Supper takes place today from 7 to 11pm. Haunted Attic Tour costs $10, the chili supper is by donation. Menu will consist of Chili, Chili Dog, Hot Dog & Drink. The event takes place at St. John the Baptist, in Piopolis.

Saturday, October 29th

A Halloween Party sponsored by the Fairfield American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary will be held on tomorrow at 1pm. A total of $600 in prize money will be awarded for categories ranging from babies to adult.

The Hanna House Museum will be handing out treat bags for children tomorrow from 10am to 2pm. Dressing in a costume is not necessary to receive a treat bag. This is the last weekend that the museum will be open until spring, so it is an excellent opportunity to check it out with your kids! It’s fun and it’s free! Don’t let local history be a mystery!

Albion’s Annual Boo on the Bricks will take place tomorrow on the Albion Square, there will be a Pet Parade with prize. The costume contest starts at 4pm. Costume Categories are: Best Group, Best Overall in each of the brackets of 0-3 yrs., 4-7 yrs., 8-12 yrs., and 13 & up. Treats start at 5pm, Trunks can set up after 3pm. There will be a prize for Best Decorated Trunk. Boo on the Bricks 2022 is sponsored by the Albion Area Chamber of Commerce.

The West Salem Development Association’s Annual Halloween activities will be held tomorrow on the West Salem Square. Judging for the annual Costume Contest will begin at 5 p.m. and will be held at the bandstand, no registration is required. It is open to all ages, but participants may only enter in one category: Ages 3 and under, 4-5 Years, 6-7 Years, 8-9 Years, 10-12 Years, 13 and Up, Couples, and Groups. Cash prizes will be awarded to the1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each category except Couples and Groups. A $20 cash prize will be given for both Best Couple and Best Group. Trunk or Treating will be held on the Square, beginning at 6 p.m. People are encouraged to decorate their vehicles, and an overall winner for the Best Decorated Vehicle will receive $25. The festivities are being sponsored by First National Bank of Allendale – West Salem, Carmi, and Mt. Carmel, and the West Salem Development Association.

Sunday, October 30th

The City of Fairfield has announced that Trick or Treat hours will be on Sunday, October 30th and Monday, October 31st from 5-8pm.

Life Fellowship Church of God, located at 815 West Main St Fairfield, will host a trunk or treat on Sunday, October 30th from 5-8 pm. There will be candy, hotdogs, and popcorn

Cornerstone Community Church in Fairfield will be hosting a Trunk or Treat event on Sunday, October 30th from 5-7 pm. Trunk or Treat will take place in the church’s west parking lot.

Lebanon North CP Church’s Trunk or Treat is Sunday, October 30th from 4-6 pm.

Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church Trunk or Treat is Sunday, October 30th from 5-6:30pm.

New Beginnings Church is having a Harvest Fest on October 30th from 5-7pm.

Wayne City Matters will be hosting a Fall Carnival on Sunday, October 30th from 4-7pm. They’ll have fun activities, carnival games, and prizes. Sweeties will host the cake walk from 4-5pm at the Baptist Church Parking Lot. Food and Drinks will include Hot Dogs, Porkburgers, Chips and Drinks; available to purchase. Sips & Sno will be selling zero sugar drinks and Sno Cones. Costume Judging will take place from 5-6pm for children age 0-4, K-2nd Grade, 3-5th Grade, 6-8th Grade, High School, and Pets; with cash and trophies for winners in each category. Trunk or Treat will take place from 6-7pm at the Wayne City School Parking Lot. Make your trunk creative, they will be judging in categories with cash awards.

The Blue Point Church west and north of Cisne will be having a Trunk or Treat on Sunday, October 30th from 5:00 to 6:30pm in the east parking lot of the church. There will also be hotdogs, chips, and drinks served. Everyone is Welcome!

Boo ’22, Boo Bash on the Wabash, takes place on Sunday, October 30th in Downtown Grayville.

Monday, October 31st

The City of Fairfield Trick or Treat hours on Monday, October 31st will be from 5-8pm.

WADI in Fairfield will host Trick or Treating on Monday, October 31st 4-5pm.

The Fairfield Banking Annual Bank & Treat is Monday October 31st from 5-7pm.

The Fairfield Library is having a trunk or treat from 4-6pm on Monday the 31st.

Trunk or Treat at the Bobcat Den will be held Monday, October 31st from 4-6pm.

The City of Fairfield and the Wayne County Chamber will be holding a Trunk or Treat event at the city parking lot, east of the post office, on Monday, October 31st from 5-8pm. This is a free event with Candy, Games, and more. Decorate your trunk or tent and help the kids have a Happy Halloween. This event is open to all residents of Wayne County.

Lemonds Chevrolet Chrysler will be hosting a Trunk or Treat event in their west showroom on Monday, October 31st from 5-8 pm. They’ll have free candy, cookies, and hot chocolate.

Trick or Treat Night for the Village of Wayne City has been scheduled for Monday, October 31st from 5 to 8pm.

The Annual Halloween Chili Supper & North Wayne Christmas for Kids Fundraiser will be held on Monday, October 31st, at the Cisne Fire Department, beginning at 4pm and running until sold out. This is a Drive-Thru Only event. Chili will come in a 20oz cup with a lid for easy transportation, and there will be cup carriers available for multiple orders. All soups and sandwiches were donated by Skillet Fork Grill of Orchardville; Crystal’s Country Cream of Mt. Erie; and Cisne Village Florist. All profits will be used for Christmas for Kids in the North Wayne Area. Cost is by donation.

Cisne Rehab and Healthcare Center is hosting a Trunk or Treat Night on Monday, October 31st just before sundown. They will also be handing out Hot Chocolate, and Marshmallows to roast as you warm up by the fire. Donations will be accepted but are not necessary.

Sims Missionary Baptist Church will be having their annual “Treat and Eat” Halloween event on October 31, 2022, from 5-8 p.m. There will be free hotdogs, chili, desserts, and treats for the children.

**Note to the Public**

With Halloween right around the corner, the staff of Fairfield Memorial Hospital wants everyone to have a safe, but fun time! FMH’s Diagnostic Imaging Department will be available the evenings of Sunday, October 30th and Monday, October 31st from 5pm until 9pm, for anyone that would like to bring their candy to be x-rayed free of charge. This is done to check for foreign objects in your treats. To have your candy x-rayed at no cost to you bring your candy bag directly to the Admitting Department of Fairfield Memorial Hospital, who will contact the Diagnostic Imaging Technologist. There may be a little bit of a wait if staff are busy x-raying patients, but they will take care of you as soon as possible! For more information about this free service, please call 847-8243.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Merit Commission is accepting applications

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Merit Commission is accepting applications now until 5pm on December 2nd for the position of Deputy Sheriff.

The physical and written testing dates will be announced after the application process concludes. Starting pay for new Deputies is $21.57 an hour. The Sheriff’s Office continues to accept applications for lateral transfer for Deputy Sheriff. Full time certified law enforcement officers are eligible for a lateral transfer of up to 10 years seniority towards payroll. A 10-year Deputy’s starting pay is $27.06 an hour. Full-time Deputies get the county employee benefit package, vacation time, personal days, and work 10-hour shifts, giving them a 3-day weekend.

The Sheriff’s Office will also be accepting applications for the position of both full-time & part-time Correctional Officer. If you have already returned an application for Correctional Officer this year you do not need to complete another and will remain on the eligibility list. Starting pay for a new full-time Correctional Officer is $19.14 an hour. Pay for a part-time Correctional Officer is $15.00 an hour. Full-time Correctional Officers get the county employee benefit package, vacation time, personal days, and work 10-hour shifts, giving them a 3-day weekend. The Sheriff’s Office also continues to accept applications for lateral transfer for Correctional Officers as well. Full time certified Correctional Officers are eligible for a lateral transfer of up to 10 years seniority towards payroll. A 10-year Correctional Officer’s starting pay is $23.38 an hour.

River stages as of this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 5.07 feet, below the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 4.86 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 4.15 (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 1.36 feet. The Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 3.31 feet, and the Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 2.77 feet.
