Second Illinois Prison Guard Sentenced In Beating Death Of Inmate

A second prison guard is being sentenced to 20 years in prison in the 2018 beating death of an inmate at the Western Illinois Correctional Center in Mt. Sterling. Todd Sheffler was found guilty last year of civil rights deprivation resulting in bodily injury and death and obstruction of justice. Sheffler is a former lieutenant at the prison. A federal grand jury indicted him, Willie Hedden, and Alex Banta in 2019 with assaulting Larry Earvin. Prosecutors say all three beat Earvin to death while he was restrained and handcuffed behind his back.
