Illinois Extension Offers Tips On Keeping Food Safe In Power Outages

With severe weather season here, keeping food safe in the midst of a power outage is something that at times is a must. The Illinois Extension offers a few tips on how to keep your food safe in the event of a power outage.

Extensions officials say to keep the doors in your refrigerator and freezer shut. A refrigerator will keep your food safe for 4 hours while a freezer will keep your food safe for 48 hours if full. After a power outage, the extension recommends checking the temperatures in your freezer. If the temperature of the food is under 40 degrees, they say the food is safe.

Officials say you can safely refreeze or cook thawed frozen food with ice crystals if the food has a temperature of 40 degrees or below.
