The Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting the first human West Nile virus related death in the state this year. The individual was a suburban Cook County resident in their 90s. The person had an onset of symptoms of the virus early this month and died soon after. Of the 12 human cases reported in Illinois in 2023, seven were from Cook County, including two in Chicago.
